Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>video, others (more info?)

I recently bought a Shuttle mini system, and the motherboard is
configured such that my AGP card is right up next to the case.
I have a GeForce 4200, and when anything is placed right on top
of the fan, the fan's whining increases severely. Is this increased
noise typical?

I've got a Shuttle SN45g Nforce2 system. With my old Gigabyte GF 4200 there
was enough space between the case and the fan to not worry about. I left it
as is and never had any problems.

Is the fan noise the main system fan? I found that I needed to install
speedfan to control the fan speeds otherwise my main system fan would always
sit at 100% speed no matter what the CPU temp was. Maybe try speedfan?

As a side note. I recently purchased a Triplex GF FX5900 and put that into
the shuttle. One problem, the fan and heatsink on the card was so large that
I couldn't get the case on anymore, due to the AGP slot being on the outside
edge of the motherboard. Had to cut a sqaure section out of the case in that
location to get everything back together. Also added a top blowhole with fan
sucking out for the extra bit of cooling. Now the shuttle is fairly quiet
and heaps cooler.

Depending on the distance between the fan and the case, the fan noise can be
exacerbated by putting the lid on.

To make it worse, on my SB61G2, the fan whine from the ATI 9600 PRO is close
enough to the whine from the CPU cooler fan to "beat". It's damn annoying.

A simple fix is to cut a blowhole over the fan on your gfx card - that'll
decouple the CPU and gfx fans and reduce the case resonance.

Doesn't seem to be a problem with my SB65G2... I wonder if they
"fixed" something with the case, or if I just got lucky?
