I guess I should have left well enough alone. Replaced my 1200mhz Duron
with an Athlon 2500+ (Barton core, 333FSB) and now have no video. I have
tried two different cards and two monitors and nothing worked so it's
clearly related to the chip swap. This a ver 1.1 board with Feb 2004 BIOS
so the compatibility charts says this chip should work. I set the FSB
jumper to 133/166 and have 1 512MB stick of PC3200 SDRAM that was working
fine before the swap. Any ideas guys?
Thanks. >> Stay informed about: No video with new CPU on 8RDA+ |

I put the Duron back in and it runs fine so I apparently got a bad CPU.
Hope the Ebay seller honors his 30 day guarantee.

Pull the board out of the case; messing with it in the case could have
shorted something. Also, you may wish to try a different power
supply. I hate to change cpu's without removing the board, flexing
them just sounds like trouble. >> Stay informed about: No video with new CPU on 8RDA+ |

Power supply is brand new and when it worked after I put the Duron back in,
that tells me it's the CPU. Thanks. >> Stay informed about: No video with new CPU on 8RDA+ |

Doesn't tell me that. I'll give it 90%, 10% possibility that the psu
isn't good enough. >> Stay informed about: No video with new CPU on 8RDA+ |

Why would a brand new 380 watt power supply not be good enough for a chip
that only draws about 10 watts more than the one it replaced? This is a
very lightly loaded system, one hard drive, one CD-ROM, 1 stick SDRAM. I'm
sending it back but I'm curious. >> Stay informed about: No video with new CPU on 8RDA+ |

Some PSUs, even though they have a high rating may still be marginal. So
for that reason I have to agree with Chris that there still is a slight
chance the PSU might be at fault.
Do you have the latest bios in the 8RDA+ ? If not maybe you should update
it with the Duron and then swap in the Barton.

I have the Feb 2004 BIOS. I think there's one from July 2004. I'm sending
the Barton back. May try an Athlon T-bred at a lower clock speed or may
just leave the Duron alone. It's really all I need on this machine. I'm
just on a minor upgrade kick and I got the Barton cheap. >> Stay informed about: No video with new CPU on 8RDA+ |

New does not always mean good. Psu's have been major trouble lately;
the I can make it cheaper boys have gotten to them.

I have two 8RDA+ machines. Both have T-bred 2100+ chips in them,
overclocked to 2 ghz (2400+) 12 x 166.

I have a 2500+ overclocked slightly (Bios thinks it's a 2800+) that has been
running very stable in my 8RDA+ for at least 2 years with stock AMD cooling.
So the CPU should work.
Maybe it is the power supply, as suggested.
But also, as you suggested, you could well have a dead chip.
I assume you took all the usual care with the thermal paste, etc.? >> Stay informed about: No video with new CPU on 8RDA+ |
