I'm not incredibly knowledgeable on video cards and have been
looking to get a new one. Currently, I have a geForce 420mx
and it's going ok but some of the games I've been getting lately
are running slow. And it's not the PC because it's incredibly fast
for regular apps.
I've got an nVidia MB (EPoX 8RDA+) and would like, if possible,
to get another nVidia video card. I know that the 5900 is going to
be coming out soon so that should drop the prices on the 5800
(currently around $250). But I heard and read several places that
the 5800 dropped the ball and kind of sucks. What about the 5600?
Is that any good?
If not the nVidia cards, are there other brands that wouldn't have a
problem with my motherboard? Ideally, I'd like it to have some of
the same features as my current video card: ability to hook up a
second monitor, virtual desktops, etc.
Thanks for any insight or suggestions you might have!
Christoph

At the $200 price point, Nvidia has nothing to really compete against ATI.
I would strongly suggest a 9700 non-pro.

*snip*
I like my Sapphire 9600 Pro a lot, $168 at newegg.com.
Okay, you can probably get a bit higher performance in
an old 9500 or a 9700, but the 9600 for me being a newer
..13 micron design has the advantage of less heat the
supplied heatsink and fan is quite small.
So I can put on a passive heatsink design and get
the quiet system I want, yet still run BattleField 1942
at 1024x768x32 4xAA/4xAF with high detail and extras
and get frame rates good enough for me.

I have an ATI retail 9600 pro and am very happy with mine also. It is
definitely faster than a 9500, very close to a 9500 Pro, not sure about 9700
non-pro. Like you I was attracted to the 9600 Pro by the fact that it is
..13 micron, runs cooler than those other cards, and does not require a
connector from my power supply.
I have 2 7200 RPM HDs, a CD-Burner and have an Athlon XP 1800+. So my
system already runs fairly hot and I didn't want to run my video card off a
PSU connector. So the 9600 Pro was a good choice for me. Supposedly they
are very over-clockable and if you OC a 9600 Pro it will be faster than a
non-overclocked 9500 Pro. Hardocp.com has some benchmarks on this:
http://hardocp.com/article.html?art=NDY0
I haven't tried OCing mine, it is plenty fast enough for me already. >> Stay informed about: Best video card for around $200? |

The pro is simply unlocked for overclocking. You can flash the pro bios
into the non-pro for a free upgrade. This is commonly done, all the files
you need are here:

ATI sure screwed up their naming convention with the 9600. The numbers
are supposed to go up as the speed goes up. But the 9500pro is a bit
faster than the 9600 so this naming convention no longer holds true.
There are still 9500pro's out there and this is the one I would look
for. .13 micron die or not. >> Stay informed about: Best video card for around $200? |

Well, it's a bit more than that. I think the pro models use faster ram
so they can run at the higher speeds with a better garuantee of
stability. >> Stay informed about: Best video card for around $200? |

It isn't. Benchmarks show the 9500pro slightly faster than the 9600. >> Stay informed about: Best video card for around $200? |
