Post subject: New video card killed the computer?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware>pc-homebuilt (more info?)

I have a Shuttle SB51G which has been running a Radeon 9200 (128 MB) fine.
Wanted
to upgrade the video card. Bought an eVGA GeForce FX5500 (256 MB). Plugged
it in. Pushed the switch--nothing. Machine was dead. Nothing. Took out
the new, put back the old video card, fired right up. Checked it again,
made sure card seated, etc. Tried to start it again. Nothing. Dead
computer. Tried the card in another machine. Works fine. What gives?
Could this be a power supply issue? I have read on this newsgroup about
folks using this exact card in this exact machine. Frustrated.

Just increased RAM from 520MB to 2GB at the same time--could this be part of
the problem? New RAM seems
to be working fine.

If I can not use this card in this machine, anyone have any suggestions for
an upgrade on the Radeon that WILL work?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding so quickly.
New card is AGP 4X/8X
Mobo manual says it has a 32 bit AGP slot which supports 1x/2x/4x AGP
device.
Card should work, no?

And help me out here--what effect might/would resetting the CMOS have?

Should I think about updating the BIOS?

Thanks.

PJL - I don't know how anybody got that combination working, unless they got
it working with an older version of the video card you bought (or a NEWER
version of your motherboard). You've got a 1.5V card in a 3V video slot.
Not all 4X video slots are 1.5V. Many of the older 4X slots that are listed
as 1X/2X/4X are the 3V variety. While the 4X card will fit, one of two
things will happen:
1) Nothing
2) Video card will be destroyed, possibly damaging the motherboard also

It's your lucky day. Smile -Dave

what power the PSU provide?
how do you know the ram works well?
take ram out and try with old setup (512, 9200).
if it still dont work you maybe cracked something while installing the
card? like a hairline through the mainboard?

regards
marcel

You should be careful of the fast that some Mobo that say they are AGP
1x/2x/4x don't actually accept newer 4x/8x cards.

I had this problem serveral months ago with my computer and purchased a
new ATI 4x/8x Video Card. (ATI 9800). Unfortunately everything I tried
in the BIOS didn't work, only until I switch out the mobo did the card
work. This happens a lot with newer cards and older mobo.

I doubt it's an issue with the power supply unless you've got 4-5 fans,
HD, a DVD writer and a ton of stuff hanging off the USB ports(like mine
is). For normal purposes 200w is fine.

Also on some older mobo in order to turn on AGP x4 you need to open(or
close) a jumper. Some of the newer cards WILL NOT BOOT unless the mobo
has AGP 4x on in the initial boot squence. Try looking for that too.
