I want my computer to think the screen resolution is 2500x2500 or
higher. For example, SONY makes a higher "screen" resolution than the
actual pixel display on some of its notebooks (1280x1024 on an XGA
display). Sony displays 1024x768 but then scrolls the additional
screen when the mouse is moved to the edge of the screen. High screen
resolution will allow me to capture radiology images exceeding
3000x3000 at full resolution, whereas now I suffer image compression
and data loss.

Is there a screen or display utility or is there a video card that
allows such high resolution settings on a lower resolution monitor? I
already have a 21 inch CRT at 2048x1536, but I am still losing 50% of
the image data on large x-rays.

I'm not sure if XP will let you do this. In Linux you can do this.
It's a feature of X. You set the desktop size to be larger than video
resolution. When you reach the edge of the screen, it scrolls
automatically for you.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

What you are referring to is called a "virtual desktop" and there is software
out there that supports it, but I'll leave the recommendations to more
knowledgeable people.

You should also check out screen capture programs. Perhaps you can find one
that will capture what the client application is displaying rather than just
what is visible onscreen.

Why won't your radiology software save the images directly?

Thanks. Knowing the correct terminology will help me search further.

The software allows saving the displayed image, but it does not allow
downloading the actual file directly. The image file is in a format I
never heard of, unique to radiology images; but the display can then
saved in .jpg. Anyway, the display only saves at desktop resolution,
losing a lot of image detail even when I save at 2048 x 1536.

Thanks again.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

FWIW, I just checked my Radeon 8500DV and with Powerstrip got it to put
up a 3840x2400 virtual desktop. I suspect that you can tweak it to do
your 2500x2500 but don't have time to dink with it further.

By the way, you might want to look into the IBM T221 monitor or the
Viewsonic or Iiyama equivalents. It's a 3840x2400 LCD.
