my sys:
K7S5A rev 3 (last bios from Elite - 10/02)
384MB PC133 Ram (128+256)
Win XP Pro SP1
Athlon 2200XP CPU
40 Gig Quantum HD
20 Gig Seagate HD
LG CDRW
Leadtek Ti4200 GFX 64mb
300W PSU
Creative Live 5.1 PCI
Extra internal case fan
system has been running reset free for over a year, very stable. recently a friend gave me 2 x 256mb SD 133, so i started to
use that, ran fine for about a week, then got a reset with a few beeps, PC would not switch on, so i reseated the ram, and it
worked fine for a day or two. then the random reset came back, so removed the ram and put back in my 384mb (128+256) which
had worked fine for over year.
my sys is back to the way it was hardware wise, but am now getting a random reset again once every few hours, PC will not
boot up, its getting power, HD lights etc are on, only cure is to remove ram and reseat, and the PC and XP will boot fine
again.
CPU is running at 44-47C, board temp is around 25C.
is my board dying / 300W PSU need replacing / would a honey bios help?
any help is very much appreciated. |

Try the HoneyX BIOS 021029 and then set the FSB and memory bus to 138/138.
My mixture of two SDram sticks worked fine for months, then I started
getting freezes in Q3.
I flashed to the above BIOS and it was still the same. Then, on what I heard
Shep mention, I tried upping the bus speeds to 138/138 and not only is my
2100+ running a hair faster (at about the same temp), but now the freezes
stopped.
This 'fix' while running two sticks of SDram has been mentioned several
times, and now I am a believer.

Note:
Any change in RAM or problems with vRAM can cause corrupted data in
the BIOS that can only be truly cleared by pulling the power cord and
clearing the CMOS and resetting the correct parameters

My guess... your power supply may be too weak... You'd be better off running with

Have you checked for the obvious - any cables etc been knocked out of place
while you were fiddling around changing the ram?

thanks to all who replied. i *think* i sourced the prob, or in fact, it found me quite quickly.
not long after my initial post, my slave HD began to die, as i was trying to access some files
from it for backup, XP would just freeze. on boot up, XP would run scandisk on it and it would
stick at 8%. the (20gig) drive was 4 years old, and had been
through the wars.
so i went out and got a new 7200 80gig as a replacement,
coupled with a 400W PSU (tsumani brand, never heard of em, but its all my local shop had!)
everything is sweet (so far), think i'll also try a HoneyX bios as someone recommended
for the 2x PC133 cure if things go tits up again.

yeah, spoke too soon, PC crashed this morning after about 4 hours, same crash,
monitor goes blank, only cure to get it to boot was to remove one stick of 256mb.
have now upgraded the bios to the Honey X 021029 with 138/138.

Perhaps try running a DOS based RAM tester, like Goldmemory or Memtest86... run it all
night long... do test with 1 stick, then next night, the other stick... that way you
can see if one of the sticks is bad. And then if both are okay, then run the test
with both sticks in, and see if that then causes errors. I believe that some K7s5a
boards have problems runnning 2 sticks of PC-133 memory. Some have had success by
removing the chipset heatsink (that is put on with cheap thermal tape), and then
taking off the tape and putting on a thin layer of thermal paste and glueing on the
heatsink with a drop of crazy glue (or better thermal epoxy) at the heatsink
corners --this makes the sis735 chip run cooler with a better mounted heatsink drawing
