It would help if we knew if this is a fairly recent system or an antique
mbrd. What was it you "screwed around" with? You should be able to go
into BIOS Setup, make sure the IDE channel is enabled and "Auto" detect the
drive. Is the HDD not seen at all or does the boot fail? If the latter,
DL a copy of BootitNG from
www.bootitng.com and see what its partition
manager sees on the HDD.
