Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware (more info?)

Hello,

I am looking for a white DVD drive. Not light grey or beige sometimes
sold as "white", but real white white to go with a Silverstone
SG02-white HTPC case.

I doesn't have to be a burner, and a slot-loading unit would be a plus.
Any recommendations ? Samsung units while sold as "white" are all but white.

TIA,
Lorenzo

Newegg has a couple of DVD burners that claim to have white front
panels, but you'll have to make your own determination:

This one looks white, and even comes with an additional, black front panel:

Also, there are couple LiteON readers--CD and DVD, both out of stock:

If it comes down to it most, if not all, optical drives come with easily
removable and sometimes swappable faceplates. A can of gloss spray paint
made for application to plastic can do wonders on a plastic faceplate if
you are careful and gives you a choice of just what white you are
looking for. The most difficult thing is masking little items that you
don't want sprayed.

Leave a beige one soaking in bleach for a few weeks.

There are many subtle shades of white, and even if one
perfectly matched the case then later after UV light has hit
it for awhile it will probably turn yellowed.

The only reliable way to get and keep a perfect match of
color is to paint both the drive and case with the same
paint. However if it does not need to be this close, check
at your local auto parts store for a spray can of while
vinyl dye, not paint meant for plastic (not Krylon Fusion,
or similar) as these are different products. Paint meant
for plastic will be a thick soft flaky result on soft
plastic while vinyl dye soaks into the plastic and leaves
the natural plastic grain intact.

Here is an example of a product you would seek.
http://www.plasti-kote.com/plastikote/auto/template.jsp?product=UltraVinyl
"Plasti-Kote Vinyl Color"
I use this all the time to paint black, grey and silver
drive faceplates. It does as well or better than anything
else I've tried though the color choices are more limited
than with other paints - but white is available.
Note that vinyl dye adheres to most plastics acceptibly, but
will not do as well as paint on many other surfaces like
prior paint or metal. I don't know how well it adheres to
primer, as there is no benefit in using a primer before
spraying it onto a plastic drive faceplate.

if you can't get the colour from the paints recommend ici do a plastic
primer in a can for plastic bumpers that allow cellulose or two pack paint
to adhere to it. this might give you what you want.

Possibly, but part of the benefit of using a vinyl dye is it
seeps into the plastic meaning the plastic retains it's
original texture, and things like the buttons and knobs
aren't larger as a result. With priming then a coat or two
of paint the result looks much different (and IMO, worse)
even if it were exactly the same color as the dye.

i understand your fears but plastic primer is like painting with water
with car tin spray paint it is very thin i am a car paint sprayer by trade.
