Post subject: wireless networking
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>networking (more info?)

Hi All,
I'm new to the networking. I have a linksys wireless system for my
home DSL. I have a desktop with the wireless adaptor and a laptop with
a wireless card. All are Linksys and all work great.

My question is, why can' the two compters see each other?. I want to
be able to access files from either computer.

Is there any way to do this with what I have?

Also, it would be great to access the printer (connected to the destop)
from the laptop.

Is there any way to do this with what I have?

Thanks.
Rich

I figured there would be. Thanks. I needed a place to research. A
good starting point.

Thank you.

There are all kinds of reasons why it doesn't work, but yes, you can make what
you have work for file and printer sharing...

Try starting here

Yes, with what you have is possible. If you're running XP, I believe
you can do this by going to Start->Control Panel->Network Connections
then on the left hit Set up Home or Small office network, follow the
steps. Ignoring disconnected hardware if it asks you. From what I can
deduce from your post, I *think* you want other, then the top option.
But double check to make sure the pictures look like your network. Do
this for both computers, making a name for each during the prompts.
Then you should be able to go to Internet Explorer and type "\" (two
backslashes) then the name of one of the computers i.e. \\desktop1 and
hit enter. Then you should be able to access files, just substituting
the different names for each computer. Add folders by right clicking
individual folders and hitting sharing & security and following those
directions. As for printers, go to the control panel -> printers,
right click the sharing one on the desktop, hit sharing and follow
directions. THen on the laptop, add a printer, network, browse, and
pick the shared one.

hope this helps
