by the way does the host pc need a pci card or does it run through the
router its connected to? I've got usb ports, a pci ethernet card and a
wireless card for laptop.

I have the same Linksys router, it has 5 ethernet ports on the back, and as
I recall, those ports are capable of addressing many more via hubs, but I'm
not to sure on that. Anyway, the literature says that to perform certain
functions (I think setting up the wireless LAN is one of them), you have to
have a computer plugged into an ethernet port.

Mine did have a problem, however. In the first month that I owned it, it
died. Did some tech support with Linksys and they agreed to RMA it for me.
When they sent me the replacement, one of the antennas was not installed
properly and I had to jury-rig that because they didn't send the nut to
secure it. Sent them a note and never got word back.

Can't say I've ever heard of corega.
If I'm understanding your question correctly, you don't require a "host"
The Router is the "host" in that it presents the front side I.P. to the
modem
and through DHCP assigns backside I.P. address's to the connected PC's
whether they are a wired Desktop computer or a wireless Laptop.
This way any PC has an Internet connection independent of the other
machines being turned on or not.
The Router-through the Modem, maintains the connection making it
available for any and all machines 24/7 if you like.
Mine have been on continuously for more than 2 years now.
The research I did indicated while the USB interface from the Linksys
and other Router's did function, it was a bit quirky and the general
consensus
among the Guru's was a PCI card for the Desktop was much more reliable.
