I have an epox 8KMM31 which was just set up with Windows XP. I have no
sound with the realtec AC-97. If you click on the Sound Manager volume
control it says that no mixer has been installed. But if you go into
device manager and click until you get down to the mixer properties
for the Realtec AC-97 audio device it says- "The device is enabled but
has not been started" How do you go about starting it? I tried turning
it off rebooting then turning it back on and rebooting, but No it will
not start. Please can someone tell me how to get this working?

I can give you a place to look. Usually when there's a reference to starting
something, you need to go to: Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services.
Look for a line that relates to your device. If you find one, right click on
it and select properties to modify it.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Thanks, you gave me the best tip yet, but I didn't see under services
anything that did the trick. I got it to work, but only after
formating the HD and reinstalling XP.

I had a similar problem with XP Pro sound and in the end, format C: is what
solved it for me.
