I have a n 8KHA (non plus) rev 1.3 mb (flashed with latest bios)
running 2 sticks of PC2100 ram (one a Crucial the other a kingston)
I had run a 750mgz Duron which was overclocked to 950 with no problem,
so I thought I would try a CPU upgarde. Picked up a 1700 XP athlon and
I am having stability trouble trying to run this chip at anything near
its rated speed (133 x 11FSB) or using ANY combination of FSB and proc
freq. (The chip came unlocked) Anything over 12 or 13 fsb the MB
reports as 5.5 FSB or some much slower bus speed.
My other components are an old S3 Trio AGP video card which is a piece
of junk but all i have. As for PCI i have an old 10BT network card and
an Adaptec SCSI card. Maybe some of the cards are prt of the trouble?
What should I be able to expect in speed with this processor on this
board? So far I am rather disappointed in the results!

Is this a known good CPU? If not, check it on a different system, if not,
revert back to your original system and check for proper operation.

If proper, and all settings are vanilla (unlikely, recheck), retry the XP,
if fail, then suspect CPU, RAM, BIOS in that order.

Sucks, I know, but this is whatcha gotta do.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

This 1700 XP is brand new, I will try and see if I can find another
system to test on.
Could my AGP vid card or the other PCI devices be at fault?

I really can't see why, the PCI bus doesn't change based on what CPU is
being used. You do have some dated goods, but there's no reason they should
the cause of what you're reporting.

However, due to the increased current draw of the 1700+ compared to the
Duron, you might be having some power issues, which might manifest itself in
odd unpredictable ways. I think your BIOS needs a line by line inspection to
rule it out as the problem as well.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hmm, I hadn't thought if the power issue, but thats a possibility I
suppose. The BIOS I just flashed to the latest version as provided by
Epox. One "weird" problem which I am having is for example at 133 x 11
fsb, the PC will all of a sudden shut off and reboot - like you hit
the reset switch on it! I also notice that at this speed setting, I
can't get it to post... I have to turn it on and then hit the reset
button to get it to post. Backing the speed down to say 120x10fsb
resolves that prpblem (but then I am running a chip way below its
rated speed).
So much for my thinking a CPU upgrade was going to be simple! Smile

I had a similar prob with an 1800 and a 2000 on a 8kt3a, the board was not
supposed to handle this chip but would run at 130fsp stable 24/7 but just
would not run at 133, I thought it was power related but even with a 550w
supply it did the same as you are seeing.

Some people got it working but not me, however the increase in performance was
worth the trouble, also held me over till I could afford a newer board Smile

Have you checked the configuration if jumpers on the board? On the
8kha+ there is a jumper that needs to be moved when changing from a
Duron (100 fsb) to an Athlon or XP.
