HI,
This is driving me nuts. It's just a regular pc running xp, 256 mb ram,
used only for storing and viewing jpegs, internet browsing, and email.
20 gb hard drive, onboard sound and ethernet adapter. agp video card. 56k
modem (which I removed)
Here's what it does, loads to the point where windows starts to load the
task bar (I think that's what its called, you know, the bar across the
bottom that has the clock in it on the far right), and then it hangs.
Repeated restarts sometimes gets it to the desktop but when you click on an
icorn the hour glass displays for a few seconds and then dissappears, but
the programs don't run. This all started after auto updates found a bunch
of updates and installed them. I did a restore point a couple of times,
that worked, and did the updates again with the same result. The last time,
however, the restore point didn't work. I could get to the restore points
because f8 got me into safe mode. AVG said there are no viruses present.
What i did next:: set bios to boot from cd and did an xp repair install,
but it hung at the same place.
Last attempt: formatted the drive, did a clean install, and it still hangs
where it begins to load the task bar?
Anybody have something like this happen before?
TIA
Mike

Do you have your own WinXP cd?
If you can, set bios to "default" & reboot.
Did Windows complete a full install?
You have done a full clean install and it still hangs so it could be a
screwed-up cd?
Borrow a WinXP cd from a buddy, is my best suggestion, Mike. Sorry. >> Stay informed about: can't get xp to work right on cerleron 1.3 G cpu |

Maybe not necessary, but should be at least 512.

Leave the modem off when you install XP.

From the XP CD, right?
Are you using Windows XP service pack two? If not, combine your
Windows XP original CD with service pack two. It's called "streaming".
There are instructions on the Internet.
Good luck.

should he run some wires from the computer to the modem on the bench?, he REMOVED IT.
maybe you should stop snipping pertinent stuff

if it is booting in safe mode then there is a driver or startup software that is locking
things up. On board sound? disable it untill you get a good boot.

thanks for the replys, didn't think to disable the onboard sound. good
idea.
hmm.. It could be a bad xp cd, i never thought of that either.
I have a working xp pc, so what i'm planning on next is cloning it onto the
drive that hangs, and see what happens then.

Stupid ideas from stupid minds.

He removed a 56k modem.

Obviously the original poster has a cable modem connected to the
"ethernet adapter", and that's why the computer is used for "Internet
browsing", and that's why he continues to do "auto updates", and
that's why he talks about "viruses". All that was after he removed the
56k modem.
So the obsessed troll JAD doesn't even read the messages he replies to
when he wants to correct another regular author.

JAD misspelled "I didn't read the original message, as usual".
Otherwise, apparently JAD doesn't understand what he reads.
