I'm about to embark on my first Shuttle XPC build. The system is to be used
for surfing the internet and downloading pix from a digital camera. My
budget was ~£700 and had to include a TFT monitor. This is the spec I came
up with. Can anyone see any compatibility issues or pass on any other
helpful comments?

XPC SK41
Athlon XP2400+ (266MHz FSB)
Crucial PC2100 512MB
Sony CDRW/DVD Combo
Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 8, 40 gig
Creative Modem Blaster V92 PCI
Shuttle PC10 Card Reader
Hansol H550 15ins TFT
MS XP home

cheers Scott

For the marginal difference in price I would go for a 333MHz chip and
PC2700 (perhaps even PC3200 for added stability, although I use
Crucial 2700 with no problem). Make sure you use this link to get an
extra 5% discount on the memory -

DVD burners are getting cheaper and cheaper ... are you sure that
there isn't a little extra in your budget;-)

The Plus 9 is better (most notably a larger cache), and again can be
found for only marginally more.

Keep your fingers crossed that it will work with your configuration.
Many, me included, have nothing but trouble getting these to work. If
you do decide to go for one, bear in mind that it is only a rebadged
Asus, so don't think you are gaining anything by getting something
with 'Shuttle' on the box (apart from paying a premium for the name).

I do not know how picky the SK41 is about the memory, but be sure to
use Crucials memory selector to select the correct module.

The Seagate Barracudae drives has a reputation for being the quitest
HDD around.

I saw a 6(?)-in-1 device (can not remember where, nor the price,
sorry), that included a diskette drive along with 5(?) different card
slots.

Depending the XP license you get (full retail, retail upgrade, OEM,
etc), it might be worth starting without XP, and load it with one of
the GNU/Linux distributions. Perhaps you will find that you can do you
image editing with a free OS and free apps.
